Filmmaking

KIDS 7–12

In this camp, students will experiment with different styles of filmmaking based on some of cinema’s legendary directors, like Alfred Hitchcock and Tim Burton. They will explore key concepts of filmmaking including storytelling essentials, camera anatomy and function, location scouting, script writing, film editing, and critical analysis. Students will study some of the fundamental elements that make each auteur director stand out from the others and then use those techniques to create their own short narrative films. They will work in small production teams, honing their project management, communication, and technical skills through a fast-paced mix of instruction and exercises. Students will regularly interact with video cameras, computers, iPad devices, and editing software bringing their stories to life.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Campers with big imaginations and a desire to make films like the cinema masters.

THE STUDENT WILL

  • Examine and analyze various auteur director styles
  • Identify key concepts and process of video production
  • Experiment with various methods of telling a story
  • Apply production management skills by performing a variety of production roles
  • Execute an effective production plan, implementing work in small time frames
  • Edit film projects to accurately convey the intended story

Final Project

3 to 4 scripted, planned, produced, and edited short films that convey an intentional story and incorporate some aspect of the “Director of Day’s” style.

Minecraft

KIDS 7–12

Minecraft isn't just a game. It’s a perfect platform for aspiring game designers to learn problem-solving, practice critical thinking, test logic skills, and implement level design strategies. In this camp, students will take control of their world with command blocks and Redstone machines. They will fine-tune their understanding of wiring and logic gates while working individually and collaboratively to create an aesthetically pleasing and fully functional Minecraft world. Whether a student is a veteran or new to the game, there are new experiences and uncharted territories waiting for them to explore!

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Perfect for campers looking to expand their Minecraft knowledge and hone their game design skills.

THE STUDENT WILL

  • Explore a standard 3D x/y/z coordinate navigation system
  • Create a design that not only looks great but is also functional and purposeful in problem-solving
  • Execute proper planning during preliminary design stages to better pivot when unexpected challenges arise in the game
  • Collaborate with peers to build a unique Minecraft creation that tells a story
  • Use basic logic programming to create working machines in-game
  • Playtest and iterate designs and builds based on peer feedback

Robotics

KIDS 7–12

Robots are in our everyday lives, from our automatic pool cleaners and floor vacuums to flying drones. For the most part, they are used to routinely carry out complex tasks in the auto, medical, manufacturing, science, and space industries. In this camp, students will learn new curriculum and understand the role of robotics in our world by participating in multiple interactive, creative, and challenging activities—such as building a robotic arm out of everyday materials—that encourage a love of science, technology, and engineering. As students design, program, and control a fully functional robot, they will explore the essential characteristics of robots (sensing, movement, energy, and intelligence), learn the basics of electricity and circuits, operate microcontrollers, and apply their newfound engineering principles and computation thinking skills in a series of robotic challenges. Robotics make STEM learning fun and can pave the way for exciting technology-driven careers of the future. Ignite the inner engineer!

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Campers who love robots and want to learn how to program them.

THE STUDENT WILL

  • Explore real-world challenges and use robotics to investigate possible solutions
  • Identify the basic components of an electrical circuit
  • Identify the sequence of communication between the robot and the programmer
  • Plan, test, and modify sequences of instructions
  • Apply core STEM principles to program and control a fully functional robot
  • Implement the Engineering Design Process as they design, build, test and improve robotic functions

Final Project

Simulated Robotic Olympics where individual robots compete in events such as movement of objects, line following, sprinting in a race, and retrieving targets
